ABANDONED BY HIS CHARACTER
I saw you on stage the night before last
Eyes bloody with tears waiting to spill over
An angel in the form of a broken man, completely alone yet surrounded
I watched you take your final bow
One last farewell before the curtains closed
And you were left, to soak up the silence
So deafening it felt like thunder
You’d repeat and repeat for the days to follow
Caught in the cycle of your own creation
New bodies in seats, new souls asking for more
But what else could you give?
There’s only so many pieces to break off
Until you have nothing left
To keep for yourself
As I observed the sweat run down your brow
Catching in the creases of your hollow smile
Skin opaque with the spotlights glare
I finally knew who you were
Stripped back, removed from the facade presented
Between seven and ten
Every Monday to Saturday
